10 Things Students Should Know

1. Tests will generally be given every other Friday. They will last one class period and, combined, will determine 50% of the quarter grade. There will be no extra time available after school. If a student is absent on the day of a test, the test can be made up after school on any day before the end of the quarter. Failure to do so will result in a grade of zero for that test. The lowest test grade will be dropped for students who maintain a class participation grade of 80 or above.

2. Homework will be assigned most weekdays unless there is a test on the following day. Students will receive a grade of 100 for each notebook check if all problems are attempted, the correct format is used, and substantial class notes are present. Notebooks may be turned in late only if due to absenteeism. Notebook checks account for 30% of the quarter grade.

3. Students will have a class participation grade of 80 at the beginning of each quarter. Points may be added or subtracted to this grade on a weekly basis. Productive, cooperative behavior and the asking and answering of questions in class will help to raise this grade. Poor attention or interruptions will result in a lowered grade. Class participation accounts for 20% of the quarter grade.

4. Students are expected to arrive to class on time with their textbooks, notebooks, calculators, and pencils. Students may sharpen pencils or purchase them from the teacher upon entering the room. Otherwise they must take their seats and begin work on the "start now" problem.

5. Students must never leave their seats without permission. If a student wishes to leave the room for any reason other than sickness, to use the bathroom or to use the fountain, he must have a signed pass. If a student wishes to throw something away, he should do it at the beginning or the end of class. Paper and other recyclable materials must never be crumpled, but placed in the recycling box next to the trash can.

6. Cell phones and other battery operated items, magazines, newspapers, food, drinks and gum are not allowed. These may be confiscated but in most cases it will simply cause the student's class participation grade to be lowered.

7. Pencils should be used exclusively in class. Students will lose points for completing tests, assignments, or class notes in pen.

8. Students may speak to the teacher on most days starting at 2:45 PM about their grade or about material covered in class. Students should not approach the teacher during class about personal business or personal issues.

9. A failing grade for the class for the year means the student must attend a 4-week summer school session if they wish to return to St. Agnes for the next academic year. A failing grade on the Math A Regents Exam means the student must attend a 6-week summer school session and retake the exam in August.

10. There will be no extra-credit available. Since grades are available online or after school on a daily basis, students should not wait until the end of the quarter or the end of the year to think about whether or not they need to work harder.
